I Ship You, And You, And You–Maybe Not You… (AMPLITUDE GAME DEMO REVIEW)

The year is 2121 and mutants are the norm, while ‘normal’ people with no power are trash. The game started with your character getting killed and is offered the choice to start a new life in a new body. But here’s the catch! Your new body’s real owner is actually still alive! And you have to share the body with them! Now, you two have to work together to achieve your vastly(?) different goals, and of course, to live a life normal enough to not let anyone find out the truth…

  • Play as a girl, a boy, a girl in a guy’s body or vice versa!

You are able as either a man or a woman inhabiting the body of a teenage boy or girl. This choice greatly affects the story arcs and the relationship and interaction of characters with you. And yes, there IS an awkward bath scene or two.

  • Stat-raising!

There are currently five different skills which the player can develop and master throughout the game by means such as doing various jobs, quests or other activities in the town. These skills are combat, deception, bravery, knowledge, and charisma.

  • Point and Click Map!

The player can travel around town and interact with NPCs via a point-and-click chibi map. Get a job, make new friends, try to find your killer, or just count the cats in the neighborhood to pass time!

  • Quests, Texting and Crafting!

You can access the messages and quests by clicking on the buttons on the upper left of the screen or the green message icon in the stats menu.

  • Last but not least, ROMANCE

The filthy shippers in you will rejoice to know how many ships are possible in this game! Which I admit that I don’t know how many myself because there are SO MANY.–Itch.io

Main Characters #1

The main protagonists? The two above are the personalities you can become in the beginning of the game, I opted to be the guy but you only have a vague idea of who you are and your last moments of life. When you are given the option to return back to a body to finish your task, you are given the choice to either reincarnate as a male or female, so basically you can be a female in a man’s body, a man in a woman’s body or male in male’s body and woman in woman’s body.

These two are the next set of main protagonists because they are the bodies you happen to possess, but things get very awkward when you find out their souls haven’t actually vacated their bodies. It’s a unique concept and can seem confusing, but once you play the game, you get the hang of it.

Many Love Interests 

I was only playing the demo so unfortunately I don’t know how many LI’s there are and who they happen to be. However, I’m pretty sure one or two of the ships can be between the protagonists themselves, which doesn’t sound like a bad deal. We do have the best friends, and a couple of side characters presented in the picture, but I met with only three people in the demo so far. 

I think it’s pretty awesome that the game gives you plenty of people to romance and I think it all depends on who you talk to more and engage with.

Stats

So here’s Jon, I decided to possess his body on the first go around, and apparently depending on how we answer the questions and how we take action, it effects the stats presented here. I find it intriguing to use cellphone bars as a way to show your stats, the display is pretty colorful and eye catching. It’s a good way to keep someone engaged, and the bright and creative textures implemented is aesthetically pleasing including the cute flair of adding paperwork backgrounds.

CELL PHONE USE

I love when games implement the use of a cell phone inside their games, it makes it much more fun and keeps the player more busy. Usual VNs or Otomes rely heavily on story rich narratives, which has to be dramatic and strong enough to keep a reader entertained. However, there are times that reading can become tiring, so techniques such as this helps pull the gamer back into the game as it gives something like a side quest for them to do.

NYAAAA-KON

NYAAAA-KON is a quest board that you can do to help raise the stats on your character and do mini side games. I do recommend doing some as it gets you out there to meet more people and do some good stuff as you try and find who killed you. I’ll admit, the web page looks like a flyer and it’s cute as hell, and it definitely caught my interest.

Answer & Reaction Grid

The overlay is good and I do love the tool bar, but I got confused as to what is what for a bit since there’s nothing that tells you what it is. The answer/reaction grid is what I call the ‘static’ type that is usually seen on top of a character’s profile, I don’t really like this type as I hate when it covers a character’s features. Otherwise, the colors to the complete layout is well done and definitely are refreshing against the background scenes.

Opening scene was pretty violent and bloody. It was an interesting way to be introduced to our first set of main characters. We understand that the character’s memories are fuzzy but they know there is something that must be done and we need to finish the task we’ve set out to do. We end up meeting a woman who gives us an olive branch by stating that they can give us a chance to return to the human world, but there is a catch… We only have a year to do what we need to do before we depart from the world permanently.

Also, we don’t get to keep our memories which was also a shitty move for her to do, but we did agree that we’d do whatever it took to get back. The narrative itself is potent enough to drive you head first into the character’s feelings and also the atmosphere that we happen to be infiltrating as gamers. I am impressed with the free flow and casual speaking tone of the characters, which is easy to follow considering the game just thrust us into a very bloody opening scene.

A few things I can remark on is the graphics and shadowing, it captures a good sense of the hospital in this scene. I appreciate the colors and the textures placed into the background, and the overlay of the text box is a good refreshing aspect to my eyes when you’re reading for a good amount of time. The character drawings are unique and pleasing as well, including the emotions portrayed on their faces, it’s also an added plus that the face of the person speaking appears in the bottom left corner in the camera lens.

Now, one of the interesting concepts of the game play is this, where you turn into a chibi-like avatar that reminds me of those freemium otome games like Ikemen Vampire. Your character is able to travel around in this RPG style movement which is pretty awesome, and a great feature for someone who wants both a visual novel and rpg style experience. It’s seriously cute and I think they did well in putting this into the game .

I’ve mentioned the art before, but this is a very killer graphic CG, and I mean that in a good way. It reminds me of the Gothic cartoonish drawings I’ve seen on tarot cards that I adore, and the artist and team did amazing work in putting in the color and the details. The lines seen in the girl with pigtails, I liked the luminosity and the pop of light in her eyes, I feel this took an exuberant amount of effort to get those striations into place. I do feel the only oddity of the picture is how her head is tilted, not sure why it seems a little weird to me, but it’s probably just my eyes LOL.

I talked about the stats up above, but let’s talk about the skills here, when you do any tasks related to NYAAAA-KON your overall personality stats get effected. So choices matter, and so do your actions!

Towards the end of the demo, I ended up trying to snoop somewhere and came upon a bloody scene with an android nurse. Not really what I would of loved to have happened but it sincerely puts both protagonists in a bind. While the story demo ends after a few other CGs, the plot thickens and so does my intrigue about what is happening in this universe.

Amplitude is definitely a unique take on a visual novel with RPG style elements that is definitely going to intrigue both casual and interactive gamers alike. I believe this game is a unique take to both an otome/bishojo/BL/Yuri simulation in the romance department, and with the casual narratives to the alluring RPG style. This game is definitely a creative piece you don’t want to pass up, and it should be spoken about a bit more. Playing the demo was enlightening, and I need to save up to buy the full game on Steam, LMAO. Honest opinion, I enjoyed this game, and I believe everyone should give it a shot, and to try the demo if you aren’t so sure about it. It doesn’t hurt, and you’ll more than likely, be amazed by it.
