SERIOUSLY GEEKY SUNDAYS: INTO THE DARK ABYSS OF BBQ SAUCE

seriously-geeky-sundays-august-questions

It’s been awhile since I touched base with a SGS post, and while I’ve missed the last two weeks, I never planned to abandon the series on my blog because I really love the idea of it being a constant post to add to my blog. I’m more than just interested in this post, it’s like I was born for this topic for the next installment of Seriously Geeky Sundays. We’ve slowly gravitated to adding additional fandoms onto the blog besides talking about Otome, Visual Novels, and Books.

Busting out from the norms of happy, giddy, and comedic types of supernatural romance tropes in games, we’ve begun stepping into also the darker areas of fantasy and love. It’s always a fun time when horror is invited to the party, and in this week’s SGS we talk about things that go bump in the dark. Check it out:

frankenstein

On this day in 1797 Mary Shelley was born and 26 years later she would write the story of Frankenstein’s monster. This week it’s time to write your own tales of monsters as we face the dark side of fandoms head on.-Heather (Geeking-by.net)

What was your first introduction to the horror genre?

giphy (81)

My first introduction to horror was through my grandmother, by watching the original black and white horror flicks of The Wolfman and Dracula. Then my more official swear in to the genre was through my mother when she decided to watch the Children of the Corn series, IT series, and Chuckie series back in the early 90s. It was after that, I was hooked on movies and TV series, and then when my mom used to work as a home health nurse she’d take me to the library in which I would start feasting my eyes on Goosebumps and Fear Street books.

Horror comes in all flavours now; what sub-genres do you like/dislike?

giphy (82)

This is a tough one, as there’s always gonna be good and bad in every sub-genre of an actual genre. So it’ll always depend on what is good or terrible, I’ve made a mention before that I don’t really like remakes of book to movie adaptations. However, there are a few out there that are created very well. So for this question, I love Asian Horror and Giant Monster flicks, for Asian horror, it’s the fact that I’m Asian and a lot of the movies that are created revolve around the legends and ghost stories I’ve grown up with. As for Giant Monsters, it’s because it’s one of the last remaining strings I have that holds a spot for me because of my grandmother. Bless your soul in heaven grandma <3!

Who is your favourite monster?

giphy (83)

Oh man, hands down it’s Godzilla, I know I talked about him before and I’ll just say it again, GODZILLA. Favorite monster of all time and will watch any movie that comes out of him, even remakes, because I’m total trash for this monster. My grandmother introduced me to him when I was a kid, and the first official movie I watched of Godzilla was Godzilla vs. King Kong. I remember frowning at the horror of people being terrified of a giant gorilla..? I was confused, compared to seeing Godzilla who is a creature created by nuclear waste and can decimate his enemies with his nuclear breath. Regardless, this guy is definitely, King of the Monsters.

What is your favourite monstrous species?

giphy (84)

In a previous blog post from SGS I talked about Xenomorphs being one of my most favorite alien species, but they’re also my favorite monstrous creature. This apex predator is an entity you should not take lightly, regardless of how well-trained in combat and stealth you may be. This creature is terrifyingly cunning, smart, and can adapt to any situation or environment it is thrust into. Whether it appears as a creature for a game or in the Predator movies, or its own franchise, the Xenomorph isn’t a monster to mess with or run from. You can only pray that luck and your gods are by your side when faced with this foe.

Monsters come in all forms including humans; who is your favourite human monster?

giphy (85)

Hannibal Lecter, I mean, he’s one of the most… There’s not a lot I can describe about him, as he’s terrifyingly smart, well educated, and above all else… a cannibal. The fact that this man may seem charming and gentlemanly to anyone in public is utterly scary. Even with the books being adapted to movies and such, the fact remains that Hannibal is beyond human mind’s conception. I still remember how dumbstruck I was by his character and how he treated Clarice.  One thing that is very chilling, he treats Clarice with more respect than Christian Grey does for Anastasia in Fifty Shades of Grey.

What is your favourite horror/supernatural fandom?

I have plenty of fandoms I love and adore, but I have a special place in my heart for The Ghost Whisperer starring Jennifer Love Hewitt. I was not okay with all the turmoil that happened for the last season, and I remember just seeing a bunch of articles about what had occurred. While I’m unhappy with the fact we never got all our questions answered, this series is beloved and I miss it terribly. While you can watch this show on Hulu and such, the character is relatable to those who are sensitives to the paranormal. Whether you believe in ghosts or not, this show puts both horror and drama together very well. It’s a must see!

The dark side of fandoms tends to be my stomping ground, even if you see plenty of reviews on regards to BL games, Otome, Visual Novels, you’ll very much find hints of horror etched into the corners of this blog… Including my older podcasts that talk about the haunted areas of certain places. Writing about the horror genre is definitely a fun topic as it also is another area that must be explored in games and other media a like. So readers, do you have any favorite horror laced media that you enjoy? Let us know!

As always, thanks for stopping by at the blog, and see you on the gaming side~!
