Tales from the Nook: The Perfect Ice Cream Sundae With Cherry Toppings

As we roll into August, the dark and horror gamer part of myself starts to peek out from the shadows. Peering out to see if it’s her time to parade around the blog and other social media outlets to speak about dark fairytales, creepy characters, terrifying novels, and nightmare fuel games. Welcome to the side of Gray’s Otome and Visual Novel Corner that focuses on both VN and Cozy Nook aspects of Gray’s Otome & VN Corner.

Where suspense, thrillers, and horror games take over. While some otome games meet the creepy aspect of the horror criteria, it’s rare… depending on what game you’ve gotten into your hands. Before we proceeded, I’d like to say thanks to Kelly from Another Book in the Wall Blog for making these Halloween themed prompts!

Now…

Reader beware, these visual novels aren’t for those who want romance flair, these are for those who dare to face their darkest nightmares.

Welcome back to Tales from the Nook, and it’s been a good ride up the mountain of terror that I’ve managed to trudge up on. In a place where only darkness seems to canvas the area, I have steadily traversed the unknown with my trust flashlight and bag full of games and books to keep me company in the wilderness that is the horror genre. For the last few blog entries, we’ve talked about dark fairy tales, scary ghost legends, and media I’ll never touch again because it scared me more than I expected it to.

In today’s blog, I’m going to fantasize what my perfect horror novel would be like and what I would love to have in it. So this post will involve a couple of GIFs and uncomfortable graphics that isn’t suitable for those who don’t like horror, and do not like blood, legends, and things that deal with the occult. So hang tight everyone, as we will need to go deeper into the forest, and I’m more than sure our flashlights will not last during this trek into the swamp.

The most ideal setting for horror stories for me has to be in a small town, the reason for it, is because there are plenty of small towns sprinkled across America that not many people may know of. It’s practically a perfect place for some small time scary debacle of madness about to happen, whether the townsfolk is in on the paranormal activity or they are aware of it but are too scared to go against it. So the main character arrives to this town for either work or to getaway from the busy life of the city, which is a cliche trope but it works for me.

They’ve uprooted themselves (and maybe their family) to come out here and find some peace of mind. The trees and fresh air will do them good, and there’s no anxiety of traffic and gunshots being heard in the middle of the night. A small town gives the idea of a fake sense of peace for this character as they settle in and their town appears to be serene and the perfect place to restore their soul.

I feel that the allure of a small town life wouldn’t be complete without adding a cozy home to live in, and this can give an example towards the “fake escape” for the character. As their home feels like a sanctuary and it’s a lot less than what they had before, giving them both anxiety and also relief, as they no longer have the responsibility of paying extravagant amounts of money to upkeep a high end two story home in the suburbs. The home is blissful, cozy, and far enough from the town but close enough to still make it to the next gas station.

This novel would include a haunting like no other from ghosts related to either a grudge, or something that somehow connects this character to a sinister story that they aren’t aware of. Slowly, the character begins to question their sanity, and if leaving the big city was a big mistake as things start going from peaceful to disturbing within the months they live in the town. Maybe there’s a dark past they are trying to escape, but sometimes secrets can’t ever stay buried, regardless of how much you pray for them to.

Within the weeks to months that the character tries to assimilate to their new life, they realize that their hallucinations may not be what they think. As entities start becoming more corporeal and begin appearing more and more before them in violent fashion. Whether it’s dragging them across the floor, pulling them under beds, or making them wake up in the middle of the night to find a demonic force breathing down the back of their necks. The tension of fear and anxiety begins to mix and the border between sorrow and anger begins to boil over as exhaustion and sleeplessness begins to overtake them.

While we’ve seen movie adaptations of Asian demons and ghosts, I don’t see a lot of them in books like I would hope for. However, that may be for the best, considering I’d probably shit my pants and be unable to sleep for a good amount of time. However, my ideal legends or lore in the book would have to be something focusing around the White Lady, Yurei, or something a bit more disturbing… When curiosity and greed gets the best of you and you do something you know you’re not supposed to.

The main character may not have been the one to do it, but someone of their family lineage may have and thus, the curse is thrust onto them unknowingly. In order to placate the evil that has plagued them they may have to do the unthinkable and do something they cannot condone, the line between good and evil being crossed as the insanity starts to get out of hand.

Something that could be considered a good ending, but this is an ideal horror story. Imagine that the final part of the book has to take place in the other side of reality. The spirit world being the final ground to lay everything to rest including the curse that has consumed the main character. Venturing into the darkest depths of despair they trudge forward and face their worst nightmares, and also the bloody past that their family may have hidden from them. In a twisted turn of events something must be sacrificed in order to stop the curse from spreading… Will the main character sacrifice themselves to stop the evil from infecting others, or will they become the new vessel in which it needs to survive and completely consume the world?

This is just my imagination running wild with me, and tossing out ideas that could be a good plot for a story. I’m a writer but even I’m unsure how to plot for a horror story, as much as I may binge a lot of this media in the comfort of my home. Crafting a story takes time, patience, and lots of notes–unless you’re a pantser, and that’s cool too. However the case, the things stated above is just from the dark crevices of my mind and I just ran with it. Do you have an ideal horror novel you’ve imagined? Don’t spill it if you do plan to write a book about it, but if you want to toss ideal horror book novels for me to read, comment away!

Thanks for stopping by in my corner of the blogosphere, and see you on the gaming side~!
