Keisuke’s incredibly handsome best friend Masayuki has always rubbed him just a little bit the wrong way. Maybe it’s because Masayuki is rich, carefree, and so stunningly handsome that he can, and does, have any girl he wants? But one day, when Keisuke accidentally wears his older sister’s panty hose to gym class, it’s suddenly his hot friend who’s doing the rubbing…on Keisuke’s panty hose-clad legs! Has he unwittingly unleashed a secret fetish that will change their relationship forever?
Hey everyone and welcome back to my cozy nook, where I discuss my opinions about comics, manga, and my love of certain book genres. In this nook entry for today, I’m going to be talking about “Jackass!” by Scarlet Beriko, to get this out there, I love this mangaka’s work greatly… however, I try and not let my attachment to the love of the artwork swindle my honesty about the manga itself. This is a boy’s love romance, or in better terms, a Yaoi, if you aren’t comfortable with these types of stories, please feel free to check out my other links on the blog. Without further ado, let’s talk about Semes and Ukes.
Meet Keisuke, our beloved Uke in the story, while he may look like the person who is the top in the book–he isn’t lmao, which makes him all the more cute. No, I’m serious, he’s a real good kid who works hard at school and is kind to others. He just happens to have a really scary resting bitch face, and it works wonders on people who are doing things they aren’t suppose to be doing.
Keisuke is driven with the need to help others, and also not to let his family down. He currently lives with his older sister and puts all his earnings into helping out with groceries, cooking, laundry, and paying bills–even when his sister tells him he can be a normal teenager and it’s alright for him to go out and have fun.
Masayuki is our charming playboy type guy, he seems to carelessly throw money and his looks onto anyone and everything–which kinda rubs Keisuke the wrong way at times. Compared to Keisuke, Masa has had a rich upbringing and is being groomed to be like the next CEO of a company of sorts. His life is very carefree, even if he attends Cram School at night for extra studies, he doesn’t need to work and seems to do what he wants without too much worry.
However, Masayuki seems to be hiding some of his darker desires from others, like his fetish for pantyhose…
It wouldn’t be an awesome manga without Ako-san, Keisuke’s older sister who is outright the best older sibling I’ve come across in a Yaoi in a long time. She’s brash, outspoken, but she is loving and kind to her younger brother. Ako-san may seem rude at times but it’s because she cares, especially for her little brother, whom she wants to go to college. She realizes early on that the only reason Keisuke refuses to go to college is because of money, even though he loves studying and learning.
At times she does silly things, especially when she’s tired–like leaving her pantyhose in her brother’s jersey pants…
We meet Shino early on in the beginning of the book, and it’s already stated he is openly gay and doesn’t give a rat’s ass on who knows or not. He’s driven on what he wants and likes, and takes not shit from others. He’s an incredibly awesome Seme, and I wish there were more of androgynous characters with his personality in Yaoi.
Not to give so much away about this amazing book, but the Yaoi itself presented characters with certain flaws arranged in the main characters and also in the sub characters. While Keisuke takes to his feelings with more acknowledgement and acceptance, Masayuki does his best to hide that he has any feelings at all. The dynamic causes an issue between the two characters and ultimately causing a situation that causes a rift in their friendship.
While the panty-hose fetish is part of the issue, it was only one 1/4 of what kind of feelings were going on between the two friends. Two friends from different backgrounds, and different views on survival and desires–yet both not wanting to act upon their wants because of external influences or thoughts. In the end, both of them recognize these flaws or bring out these flaws to the light by their own voices.
Making up with one another, and also admitting to one another about their feelings towards each other.
GRAY’S COZY NOOK
I tried my best not to mention as much spoilers as possible because this book was so good, and I loved it dearly. The characters are all well written, the visuals crafted for the intensifying moments between the individuals were spot-on, but most of all–I adored the wholesome love in here. I was glad to pick this copy up, it filled my heart with a bunch of rainbows and butterflies with how cute everything was and how their ending turned out.
I do hope you check Scarlet Beriko’s other works because they are amazing, but if you want a high school-themed love with a wholesome feel–Look no further than “Jackass!”
