Character Type: Yandere

To each their own. While we may not agree to each other’s likes and dislikes, please behave respectably towards one another. Understand that while other’s like a certain aspect in a game or character that may seem abnormal or obtuse to yourself or others. Realize that it doesn’t mean that the person who happens to like these elements in a GAME, supports these actions in real life scenarios. I already know I’m not a fire breathing leviathan in human skin, but in a game, let me be an evil destructive Goddess is all I’m saying…

To whoever wrote the message for the picture above, I agree with you, no one in their right mind would love these kinds of people in real life. However, that’s the beauty of the world of fantasy romance in gaming, we can get closer to the darker aspects of our desires in a safe place without putting ourselves in a clearly dangerous situation. Let me explain, there’s a saying for us in the gaming world, ‘to each their own’ and if you like something in a game doesn’t mean you prefer it in the real world.

In a previous post written on Amino, I talked about my otome husbands, and if I would actually have a real relationship with them or not. While I love Yanderes for the horror/suspense vibe, you best believe that if I were caught in an actual situation that involved a Yandere person. I would not stand for it, and that’s where we draw the hard line between fantasy and reality.

Case Management Meeting: Yandere Types

Hiiro No Kakera Shin Tamayorihime

Gray’s Interpretation: IMO, a yandere is what we people like myself define as someone who is ‘crazy in love’ or “obsessively in love” to the point they allow their desire of love to cloud their judgment and actions.

The world’s definition of a Yandere? A term for a person who is initially loving and caring to someone they like a lot until their romantic love, admiration and devotion becomes feisty and mentally destructive in nature through either over protectiveness, violence, brutality or all three combined. Yandere characters are mentally unstable, incredibly deranged and use extreme violence or brutality as an outlet for their emotions. Yandere are usually, but not always, female characters. (Fandom Wiki)

Saint Germain from Code: Realize

Yandere personalities can differ depending on game or story, whether they were sweet little cuties, tsundere buttheads, or the quiet kid who kept to themselves in the back of the classroom. The term Yandere is a mixture of Kuudere, Dandere, and Tsundere, so it basically means… If you’ve played DDLC before, you can get a little crazy psycho of love in any character type you’ve met.

Consider the Yandere trait something that can be an added element to add either the horror, suspense, or thrill aspect in a game. Most of the time love between a Yandere and an MC rarely ends well, and if it does end well consider yourself and loved ones safe… until someone dares to harm you again.

You can call these lovers … truly ‘crazy in love’ that they really will do about anything to keep you by them. But… people tend to categorize these yandere types under one word without realizing there are stages or subcategories they fall under. Depending on what situation you find yourself in with a Yandere, it’s good to understand the basics of what KIND you have found yourself with versus thinking that all of them can become love-driven killing machines (albeit most people do think this way).

Iori Nijo, Wanted Son In Law

mugai-gata 無害型

Harmless type.

“As long as she’s/he’s happy, I’m happy.”

Now, this is a rare one, okay? These are the ones who are obsessed with you but won’t try and kill your love interest or you if they can’t get your affection. They will try very hard to get to be your boyfriend but if they lose, they overall just want you to be happy, and won’t plot something dangerous against you and everyone who happens to be acquainted. Ukyo from Amnesia

Now, here’s an interesting but fairly twisted example… When a character has two personalities in one body, and both have a Yandere categorization. I’m certain some people will recognize this character as Ukyo from Amnesia, he is the last route of the game but also the ‘true route.’ If you thought Toma was the scary one, then Ukyo makes Toma look like a wolf that needs more cuddles and treats.

So Ukyo’s is a Dandere character, however, he carries a mixture of Mugai-Gata & Jiko-Gisei-Gata in his ‘normal’:

CG] Amnesia: Memories - Ukyo CG | Otome iOS | Amnesia anime, Anime ...

We already explained the mugai version above, but what is a jiko-gisei-gata?

jiko-gisei-gata 自己犠牲型

Self-Sacrifice type.

“If it’s for you I wouldn’t mind dying!”

He doesn’t mind dying for you, he will sacrifice himself dutifully no matter what the cause to keep you alive. He loves you so much he would be willing to sacrifice his own happiness, soul, you name it; he wants you to live. He will do it for you.

[SPOILER ALERT] When you play his route you realize that Ukyo’s ‘normal’ side is obsessed with keeping you safe and out of harm’s way even if it means killing himself to do it. When he lost the heroine the first time, he made a wish to be together with her again, but fate is a very cruel person when you try to mess with her tapestry of life.

Due to Ukyo’s wish to twist the hands of fate, he locked himself into a very horrendous spiderweb of ‘a life for a life’ in his story due to his wish of wanting to be with the heroine again. However, because of the strings of destiny and his constant interference, Ukyo would see the heroine die countless times which is what creates his split personality. (Fandom Wiki)

Image may contain: one or more people

Meet Ukyo’s ‘dark’ side, who is also a mixture of two Yandere subtypes:

shuumatsu-gata 終末型

Final type.

“I don’t need a world where she doesn’t exist.”

His love of the heroine and consistently losing her in every world to either the clutches of fate or his own hands, his mind distorted and cracked into the split personality we see in the game. Which in turn created this personality that you see above, one that sees that either you exist or you don’t, either way, whether you exist or not; he also will disappear but also end people’s lives (mostly yours) to end his world. (Fandom Wiki)

bouryoku-gata 暴力型

Violence type.

He “uses violence” (bouryoku wo furu 暴力をふる) towards you.

Due to the fact he can’t ever be with you, his dark side makes it his civil duty to harm you and put an end to all his suffering and yours. He takes pleasure in this aspect of being able to kill you since you’re the reason he was created in the first place. (Fandom Wiki)

While I have mentioned these subtypes above I’m going to mention that Ukyo’s ‘dark’ side can also be classified as:

Ura Ukyo (With images) | Amnesia anime, Amnesia memories, Amnesia

(also referred to “Cute and Psycho”) is a Japanese term used to refer to normal people who suddenly become violent, sometimes due to a past trauma. Yangires are very similar to Yanderes, both are people who suffer from a personality disorder and can easily become violent and extremely dangerous. (Fandom Wiki)

  • Phew–! Ukyo was a lot of representations, but he’s a great example of subcategories for the Yandere and helping people understand the types.

Sakamaki Brothers - YouTube

I’m very certain everyone has heard the title or name Diabolik Lovers, it is an acquired taste for anyone looking into a world where there are vampires and pure sadism and domination. I feel, personally, that the game lacked a few things, one that the heroine shouldn’t be submissive to everything that the vampires do to her. This game is borderline questionable in certain aspects, just like Maggot Baits.

The reason I state this is that all the men in Diabolik Lovers have a Yandere quality that makes the game thrilling to people who prefer to have an obsessively scary ordeal fall upon them. While I’ve read translations of the game and played a bit of it on my own, IT IS NOT FOR EVERYONE, and please do not bash others who like the fantasy world of this otome.

There is one particular Yandere I wanted to list from the game just for the sake of this post as this type does appear every now and again in mangas/anime, and now, in otome:

Diabolik Tales — Kanato Sakamaki || EVILDOER
Kanato Sakamaki: Bizarre Type

kyouki-gata 猟奇型

Bizarre-Seeking type.

“I love you, so… can you give me your fingernails? I want them so I can always have a part of you with me!”

He is an extremely acquired taste and can be considered one of the more terrifying of the bunch with his personality. Kanato represents a bizarre Yandere who… Well, he can be a mixture of many Yandere types but I’m going to use him as a bizarre version. These are the types who will kill you BECAUSE they love you, and he may or may not… preserve your dead body somewhere and dress it up cutely and act like you’re alive still…

Or take a few locks of your hair, fingers, blood… and make tea with them…

Amnesia shared by Yorii_San on We Heart It

sokubaku-gata 束縛型

Restraints type.

Another type of Yandere that others are more familiar with in Otomelandia is Toma from Amnesia, I will say this now, he was the first route I played and I took my time analyzing him in his route. He’s the classic version of a Yandere, one who is in love with you, but his love and desire to have and protect you cloud his judgments and sense of reasoning. In his thoughts, he felt he was doing his best to protect you until he figured out what was going on and found who the culprits were.

FYI, Toma’s ‘Amnesia After’ Story brings more clarity to his main story in the original game, where he actually encourages the MC to find someone else due to his actions in the previous game. Call it his ‘redemption’ story, but he openly admits and keeps telling the MC that she shouldn’t be with someone who could do the things he’s done to her. He’s an extremely complex character, but he’s another character analysis for another time!

Celianna on Twitter: "Wtf is this unexpected yandere. #Ephemeral… "

DV-gata DV型

Domestic Violence type.

“It hurts? That’s your fault! Next time learn your lesson and stop looking at other men!”

Now, this is the yandere type we need to be wary of as these are the ones who will result to domestic violence on you and others. Whether it’s out of jealousy, feeling ignored, everything that you do is your fault and you shall be punished…They will beat you and say it is your fault, whether it’s pent up rage or emotions, you will deliberately be punished for something they do not like.

This is by far the most dangerous and UNACCEPTABLE Yandere type, the ones above are scary, don’t get me wrong. However, this is the one I steer clear from in any game if I can, because it takes into account characteristics of reality that I can’t ignore even in the fantasy realm of gaming.

Just a heads up, Natsume from Ephemeral is not a DV-Gata, however the picture I used is a good quote representation of what normal DV’s would say TO YOU and not the other party…

Otome Game Review – Diary by Operetta | Koorinokoro's Kusoge 'R' Us
Diary by Operetta

It’s tough as a gamer to have a place where you draw the line because these situations can trigger us, and this is where fantasy and reality become a gray area. This is where I tend to stand in this aspect of insanity, in the broad reality, this kind of behavior is not something anyone wants or can take pleasure from. What I do feel though, is that people who like Yandere type stories or characters, we ourselves are looking for something to engage our excitement in a way of fear or thrill.

Consider this, some people watch horror movies and others will not. Does watching the Halloween series and slasher type b movies make me a bad person, or assist my thought process in believing killing people is okay? No. I watch suspense/action/horror for the adrenaline rush and seeing if something can scare the living hell outta me. This is why I like reading Yandere stories since I’m a bit of a horror and suspense gamer and reader.

Dangerous Fellows Otome Game: Lawrence's Patrol | Dangerous ...
Dangerous Fellows: Lawrence

I believe the reason why these types of characters are placed in a game, or characters carry the Yandere trait, is to create the atmosphere for thrill-seekers like myself. I understand not many want this kind of thrill as it this character, just like the Dom Type (i.e. Eisuke Ichinomiya ~Paid Version~, Victor MLQC) can cause others to feel that these characters are crossing the lines of fantasy. This is what I think is a double-edged sword, a lot of us are looking to escape reality or focus our emotions on something other than the places we are currently present in.

However, we aren’t prone to having a moment with a game when we feel it has gone too far with the ‘fantasy’ shield and using certain imagery and concepts as a way to gain attention or notoriety.

When we sometimes wish to leave the world of reality we come into situations in a game that can resemble something that occurred to us in the outside world. This is the tough part, it’s here where we choose to either forfeit the game safely and go a different route or read/play on. It is also here that as gamers, players, friends, and family we have to respect each other’s opinions on game elements.

So if we have friends who like a character that you did not like, it’s okay to disagree, as long as you all already know that they won’t be going to a casino in Las Vegas and try employing themselves as a maid so they can find the black market and be sold to a bidder… It should be dandy.

You should also know I’m not a human, and I’m actually a reincarnated goddess who sacrificed herself in order for the world to be safe (poking fun at Star Crossed Myth), and now I gallivant as a human for the sake of balance. Guys, I’m poking fun here, so humor me, this is where I bring about understanding what is reality and what isn’t, and where the shield of fantasy allows us to safely explore these tastes.

I’m fairly certain I’m walking the shadows of between what is acceptable and what isn’t, as even I have my moments when I disagree with a concept or idea that doesn’t help develop a character or wasn’t necessary to be included in the story. However, I’m going to always state that ‘we can agree to disagree’ even if my own opinion about a type of character or game does not line up with my own ideals. Shadow work, may come into play here, but I’m not going to go into that in this post.

Although my favorite character type is Yanderes, I understand where the lines must be crossed and the walls must be built. Call it my bleeding heart for dark, macabre, and horror-filled stories that make me captivated about this type of character in games. However, even I know where insanity and reality must be stopped.

The Funniest Otome Character

Impey Barbicane – Two Faced Gamer

For this blog post, I’m going to talk about one of my best boys, Impey Barbicane who not only is hilarious as hell, he’s ultimately the character that I feel could be my best friend in real life; regardless that he can’t really flirt properly. While I felt that in his route for Code: Realize was lacking in a lot of aspects, I felt that the writers were using up his comedic personality to fill in certain gaps.

Usually, I don’t condone that kind of storytelling faux-pas since it deteriorates the engagement of the readers when you put in fodder versus complexity. However, Otomate created a character who is undeniably strong in his own birthright and challenges comedy, intellect, and romance all in one graceful swoop. While the storytellers failed to deliver a strong emphasis on his storyline, you can’t deny that they did extremely well with showing his character.

Assessing Impey Barbicane

impey barbicane | Tumblr

The funniest otome character I’ve encountered in my travels through the gaming world is Impey Barbicane of Code: Realize, sure, he’s the funny and flirty character out of the Lupin gang. however, don’t be fooled by his comedic antics and failed attempts at wooing the MC, he’s actually a serious guy with a sensitive heart. When we first meet Impey it’s after the rescue of the MC from her family home in Wales, and the steam-powered automobile that’s supposed to get you to London… blows a gasket somewhere and causes a bit of a stir.

His entrance isn’t the most flashy like Lupin, Van, or Victor’s introductions were, but you best believe he was still very impressionable with his pick up lines. The engineer of the group is one of the best guys to still fall for in the game, and I’m possibly biased as his voice actor is one of my favorite seijyuus, Shotaro Morikubo. For people who aren’t familiar with this man, his most notable acting skills have been portrayed in the most well-known series produced by Atlus, Persona 4 as Yosuke Hanamura, and also Soji Okita from Hakuoki.

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

I’m in love with the goofiness that was captured just for this character, and most gamers can either agree to either hate or love him. He is an acquired taste with his over the top sexual flirtation moments, but he has his moments that you can’t help but watch his side profile as he looks up at the stars and tells you a part of his past that you wouldn’t have even known about. Besides being the butt of insults and jokes aside…

The man can be serious when push comes to shove, and when you see his unbridled passion for the love of science, you can’t help but be pulled into his energy. To be honest, he reminds me a little of Spongebob from the broadway show where they sing ‘Hero is My Middle Name.’ He’s a very optimistic character, but he will show his times of weakness to the heroine when you choose to pursue him.

He’s a super-intelligent even though he doesn’t seem like the brightest bulb, did I mention he’s not bad to look at when he’s serious about his work and inventing items that actually don’t explode. There are moments in the game I do feel bad for him when everyone gangs up on him for certain things but he takes the jokes and u=insults with stride, and lets it slide off his back like water off a bird’s wings.

The Otome Guide — Code: Realize ~Future Blessings~ After Story ...

Speaking of water rolling off his back… I did state he’s pretty hot when he’s not being a complete dork about stuff. It’s moments like the one from above that when you see his intentions about his passions towards inventing and engineering machinations for science. Like, damn boy, you’ve definitely got me in the ringer for having a best friend crush on you… Until he starts flirting over the top and make obscene moves to show his affections. However, you can’t hate his integrity to pursue the MC throughout the game even though his heart gets broken a few times in the game. (technically everyone gets their heartbroken since we all know the true route is Lupin’s gameplay)

code realize impey | Explore Tumblr Posts and Blogs | Tumgir

Although I’ve mentioned he’s the funniest character I’ve met, he’s also insanely talented as a chef that I wished Otomate allowed him to have a side story of cooking recipes as my hobby is cooking and baking. I would like to learn some tips and tricks on how he cooks a couple of things and also bake those famed cookies and sweets I see every now and then in the side stories.

The other added element to his character that I find fairly entertaining and funny, is that animals tend to mark him as a dangerous person (which, he is in a certain way…). You can’t help but laugh when he’s about to get some love and affection from the MC and Sisi (the resident Corgi) butts in and bites his leg. I’m sorry, I feel bad but at the same time I couldn’t help but laugh so hard about this scenario–it’s just beyond comical.

Falling in Love with Impey Barbicane

Impey Barbicane - Code: Realize ~Sousei no Himegimi~ - Image ...

There’s a lot to say about how charismatic and energetic this man is, and because of his infectious way of humor and antics even I can’t help but love the funny man. Which we all know, I usually don’t fall for the funny guy very often, but Impey is another one of those rare birds that can attract my attention. He’s not a real smooth talker, we can all vouch for that but he makes up for his incorrigible deviant moments with his charming sensitivity to read other’s emotions.

It may not look like it, but when he falls in love he is doting as he is kind. Those tender moments when he isn’t being a Class A–Immoral Womanizer (LOL), he shows his love by gestures of more ‘showing’ and less ‘telling’ of his admiration for you. I feel he can be overlooked at times because he’s such a different person compared to the other characters of the game. However, I think in a way it’s good he’s overlooked until the very end because he can suddenly surprise the reader with his true nature.

CG] Code Realize ~Guardian of Rebirth~ - Impey Barbicane CG ...

I’ve spoken relatively about his serious outlook about his work and how he does more than his best to improve inventions and gadgets to help the crew. To some, this passion may not be attractive, but to me it is. Impey shows heart in believing in dreams and enduring criticism from many, but he doesn’t let those words stop him from pursuing his dreams. Working tirelessly into the late evenings to perfect his plans and help out the gang, it’s amazing that he takes time to stop his work to sit and talk with you open-heartedly.

unnamed (1)

Ugh, passionate people always pique my interest, when you can be that devoted to your craft it lets me as a gamer/reader/overall as a person, know what kind of person you are. It takes integrity and courage to face inner demons and outside critics to go for your dreams, and Impey, no doubt leads the revolution with his outgoing and outspoken ways of expressing himself.

What I feel we learn from him as a character is hard work, passion, dreaming, and believing in the impossible regardless of what people say. Yes, he is a funny character, but he’s much more than that if you give him that chance. If you want to see a better story about him versus his original Code: Realize story. I recommend his Code: Realize ~Wintertide Blessings~ story as it gives a little more depth to what was missing in his storytelling in the original game, and it portrays the emotions I was hoping to get out of him in the true storyline.

Code realize, ps vita, otome game, impey barbicane

As I wrap up this character analysis/favorite funny guy blog, I find myself looking at Impey with nothing but heartwarming feelings and love for the man. I may not see a lot of rave reviews about him, but I feel if you need a route that’ll make you cry tears of laughter while teaching you to never give up on your dreams. Impey Barbicane is the funny man for you, whether you see him as boyfriend material or your best bud, he’s definitely one of the memorable characters of fun in the otome world.

Story Jar: Lost Island’s Ryo Tsuzuki Review

As a fair warning to anyone reading this review, I may go into a tangent at the game creators on a few things about this game and their decision to transfer it into Story Jar. Please be advised, there will more than likely be spoilers in this review if you do not wish to know anything please consider playing the story on Story Jar, if you really want to spend more money than necessary…

On today’s review we are going to throw it way back to when NTT Solmare was thriving and (didn’t decide to be smart about their database holdings and have the decency of transferring game data) they had many beautiful titles in their holdings that many otome lovers would swoon over. However, those are days gone by and we are now in the present where all the stories you may have purchased a long time ago have now vanished and more than likely will never return, which includes past FREE versions of these stories as well.

A Little Info about NTT Solmare aka Shall We Date?

I’m going to rant a little here, as a heads up, I’m more for the paid version of games rather than free due to the fact that I don’t like waiting or playing mini-games or paying MORE than necessary for a good story.

An example is with this game I’m about to speak about, a few years ago with Lost Island each game route cost $3.99-4.99 and then substories/epilogues cost .99 cents afterward. In total, I spent about 25.00 on the entire game, however, when the game got transferred into Story Jar with no ‘game data transfer’ option. It meant past players who bought the game in full lost all game content and would have to start over and now, pay all over with more interest to boot.

So let me explain Story Jar’s concept, you get two free story tickets every few hours, but in order to get the good ending, you must pay ‘diamonds’ to get the premium answers. Each premium answer costs you 12 diamonds, now then, here’s where the money starts piling up, there can be up to 14-15 chapters and each chapter has one to two questions that always have premium answers.

So if you think about it, if you only have 15 diamonds that were given for free, you can only make one premium choice per game. So… If you want to get the premium answers consistently in every chapter, it now costs you 1.99 (20 Diamonds)-99.99(1500 diamonds) dollars to get the premium ending versus the flat 25.00 you may have paid to get the entire game (including epilogue and side stories). The same system goes for story tickets…

angry the hulk GIF

So if you think about the math, which I won’t even do because it should already tally up with just my explanation about the whole thing… You can imagine my ire at this whole concept when I bought this game in full a long while back and come to find out, I have to start over with paying triple (or quadruple) the amount to get the good ending that I got for a total of only $3.99 previously without the side stories or epilogue set.

To NTT Solmare, while I looked over what caused your demise in certain aspects of your business, I do not agree with your tactics that you used to start over. Compared to your rival, Voltage Inc, at least they did right by allowing game data transfers into their app Love365.

With all the respect and ladylike grace left in me, NTT SOLMARE aka Shall We Date? I have only one thing to say to you:

So a few years ago Shall We Date came out with a thrilling otome game called Lost Island and Lost Island+ (free version), it was one of the few otome games to bring a horror element into a romance sim without the use of a Yandere. Invoking nightmares and intense situations that made you grip in worry about the characters and even the innocent MC in the story.

Created with stunning visuals and great storytelling, this was one of the best games ever created from the Shall We Date company, as it took a leap of faith in combining horror/suspense and romance into a blood-curdling screamfest.

Let’s take a dive into Lost Island’s humble beginnings.

Somewhere in Japan… there is an island called Aoshima, which has a beautiful nature. You (a new researcher) come to the island to research the new energy under the hopes to study with one of the most famous experts in the field. However, as you live on this quaint and remote island, mysterious deaths start to occur while you continue your research. At first, the deaths don’t seem connected to the research you are working on, but when a close friend of yours dies suddenly without warning, suspicions start to arise.

Just what is happening on this island? Well… Some secrets refuse to stay buried. (Fandom Wiki)

Undead Beginnings

When you first meet Ryo, you immediately recognize that he has an alpha male nature and tends to lead everyone with a calm and cool mindset (he might be related to Subaru Shidou…). At first, you brush off his way of thinking and logical thinking skills as something that comes with being a security guard at the laboratory you work in. You’re friendly with the man and even wonder about him curiously as his attitude seems very different from being a normal security guard at the facility.

In the first chapter, Dr. Sakaki practically drags or forces you to come shopping with him to buy supplies for a company BBQ he decided to just create that day. Depending on who you’re romancing the situation about the BBQ differs just a bit in the routes, but the same outcome usually comes out from it. Where he tells you that he needs you to help assist him to bring the booze and food for the potluck LOL.

Dr. Sakaki

It’s here you get a better view of the top three romanceable men at first degree:

“Alpha male, cool-headed, seemingly the leader; extremely passionate.”

“Comes off as cold, curt, and standoffish… But it is sensitive and slightly sadistic…”

“Calculating, nonchalant at times, but is a gentleman; He’s pretty rough (wink).”

While out getting groceries you find out from one of the locals that someone you were acquainted with passed away suddenly. The news comes as a bit of a shock, you may not have been close to the person but the fact that the person was very young surprises you and your friends. You decide that you’ll visit this person’s grave to pay respects later on…

Several days after the BBQ, you are invited to hang out with a few of the friends you’ve made on the island, and Ryo lends a hand with helping you bring food to the event. It’s here you meet another romanceable character, the happy, young, and go-lucky Shota Todomi.

After you settle in with bringing the items and such, your friends and you coax Ryo into staying and hanging out as well since he also has the day off. Both Shota and Ryo are actually hesitant about him staying, but after much FORCEFUL encouragement, Ryo stays with the group to the dismay of Shota. It’s a wonderful beach day, where you both get to know each other a bit better and it’s from here that you actually realize there’s something pulling you towards the cool-headed ‘security guard.’

174While you two are trying to get better acquainted in friendly conversation, Shota shows up and basically tries to shove his way in between you two. In a very obvious attempt at trying to get the MC to realize that he’s jealous and that he sincerely likes her. Ryo takes note of the situation but in his calculating mindset, he ignores Shota’s irritation and continues on merrily LMAO.

Later in the day, as night begins to settle Shota and the others decide to play a game of courage where you’ll pair off into groups of two and go off into the darkness and place a flower on a grave marker at night. What should have been a game of innocent fun soon turns into a dark shadow of death for the group as screams erupt from the graveyard as bodies begin to rise from their earth and attack one of the members of the group, who in turn, turns into one of the undead as well.

It’s at this moment Ryo turns from being a ‘security guard’ into someone different before the heroine’s eyes as he pulls a gun out and rushes them to safety. The MC states that security guards don’t carry guns, how does he have one? Unfortunately, Ryo doesn’t find this pertinent to talk about at this moment and tells her they’ll talk later. Thus begins the nightmare hell of Lost Island, ZOMBIES Y’ALL GET THEM GUNS OUT XD!

Assessing Ryo Tsuzuki

In the beginning, Ryo isn’t someone who takes kindly to anyone who wastes his time or cannot appropriately ascertain a situation with logical thought. To be honest, I get it, he’s very serious about keeping people alive and making sure that he completes the mission at hand. He reminds me of Subaru from Sweet Fuse, which is justly considering he works for the government and also the police department. So the two carry the same characteristics and attitude that you can’t help but be drawn to, with all that alpha dominance in him (written correctly, and no Mr. Gray bull–).

zombie GIF

As the situation of the zombies and the virus come to light in his story, both the MC, Shota, and Ryo are placed in a group together. Which causes plenty of drama, as we already know Shota is in love with the MC, so it truly does grab at your heart how this love triangle unfolds. However, because of the differences between the two men, you can see where Ryo’s faults are in expressing himself and his own desires.

Due to his line of work and what happened to his family in the past, Ryo’s logical thinking is to keep a distance from anything that can become a desire to love. Given that he could die any day because of the type of job he has, he doesn’t want to see others suffer at his expense, so he keeps the MC at arm’s length. Which makes it fairly difficult for both the MC and the reader, as Ryo is not the typical brute dom that we see in newer otome games.

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

He’s the classic dom type that exudes protectiveness and alpha charisma, but he doesn’t start blatantly treating the MC like trash or saying things that are brutally over the top. His way of making sure you are safe is to keep stating things that are similar to ‘forcing’ a friendzone territory even though his heart is already set on falling in love with you. His approach could be considered a good tactic, however, readers and even good old Lionel recognize his terrible attempt at ignoring his feelings.

Even after a conversation with Lionel, the sexy detective is hard-pressed to still continue keeping the MC at a distance; his idea is he is protecting both your heart and his own too by not reciprocating your feelings for him. It’s a cruel tactic, but this commonly used move in most romance books was well written and implemented properly in this story.

Sadly, his attempt at keeping things platonic with one another suddenly goes south when an incident occurs in the village, and Ryo is bitten by one of the zombies. Thus, the events from this point on intensifying the emotions between the MC and himself, both getting caught up in both the suspense of their situation the passion burning between them.

Falling In Love with Ryo Tsuzuki

Be prepared readers or game goers alike, when this guy falls in love he damn well does not hold back on his affections. His dom-type demeanor gets you hot under the collar as he lets others know that you are his and that no one else should dare come closer to you. My heart wasn’t prepared for just how he expresses his love, he’s not the type who will tell you you can’t go out with friends and keep you locked up unless its in bed.

Naw, he’s the type of alpha male that lets anyone who thinks they can come in and try to take you away from him, that they best be ready to say their prayers for even trying to make an attempt. His love is searing to a point that I had to step away from my iPad for a few minutes every time his love scenes came up because he’s intense as hell.

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

His aggressive streak behind closed doors really got under my skin including when the MC and he finally make love to one another. I will point out at this moment, the MC is a virgin, and he’s her first in everything, many things can go wrong in these kinds of scenes but I extremely applaud how the scene was done. If you’re not comfortable with seeing sex scene descriptions, skip the slides below; otherwise, enjoy the heat.

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

While I know it shows his character in clothes during this scene, but it still doesn’t erase the heat rising to my cheeks when I read how gentle he was being for the MC. Like, thank the gods he wasn’t being carnivorous and brutish because I would have been pissed AF. This story was very refreshing to me because I’ve seen way too many dom-type stories become stupid and you just want to throw your gaming console across the floor.

The possessive, feral, and slightly obsessed detective was brought out very well in both his main story and epilogue set. Making me as the reader craving to know what happens between the two characters in the future, because their romance is hot and I couldn’t help but fall in love with Ryo further just because he can switch from gentle to rough at a drop of a hat.

Bonus: Ryo being Jealous AF (So Cute)

However, when a story is done well, and we come to love these characters and becoming entwined in their stories. That’s when it becomes tough for a reader or gamer to part with a series after the last chapter is read and you’ve let all the words bleed into your system. Before the NTT Solmare Armaggedon, this game was one of the very first games I would recommend to people who wanted to play an otome that was different and made you engage with a situation.

There are people who you care for in this game that you will see die, a lot of bittersweet moments, but hellish turmoil creates such an atmosphere of suspense that falling in love with someone seems incredibly ridiculous. I do believe that sometimes otome games use the ‘suspension bridge’ effect a little too often, but if the story is written well and you’ve got me engaged, that’s a good start for an incredible tale.

I do recommend this story to anyone who wants a romance with both bite, sexy romance scenes, and who likes a dominant male as their preferred man of romance. Ryo still goes down as one of my favorite men in otome games, while I’m not a fan of the Story Jar app, I will always be a fan of Lost Island.

My Top Three Least Favorite Game(s)…

Animated GIF

We all have games that we just didn’t jive with no matter what we tried to do, maybe a friend recommended it and it turned out to just not be your cup of tea. Another option is that the game looked good, the premise sounded amazing, but as soon as you hopped on that bandwagon it collided into a telephone pole and burst into flames in the first half the trip. Then there’s the last scenario )that always happens to me) where you had high hopes for the game, there was an amazing team of people who worked on the project, everything looked amazing, the beginning of the game is greatly executed, and then as soon you get closer to the climax–everything goes to shit…

Yep… I’m the type that has had all these happen to me, but the more often one associated with me is the last scene where the storyline falls short of the drama and issues it created in the beginning. It sucks, but it happens and we go on to live another day to find another game to erase the terrible experience. However, sometimes you can’t forget these games because they’re either sitting in your shelf or on your steam account begging you to replay them (even though you feel that slithering emotion to scream at your computer screen at seeing the title).

It’s rare for me to say what my least favorite games are, as I rarely have a game that falls flat for me (cough, Final Fantasy XIII-2).

mad computer GIF

While I’m going to list only a few of my least favorite games here, please be advised, I’m not here to fight anyone. These are my own personal opinions and to each their own, as I may like games that others didn’t like and vice versa. We all are gamers here with diverse opinions and desires, so take what I say with either a grain of salt or laughter.

Number One

This is a BL visual novel that I picked up because there was plenty of game reviews about how this game was well done, and the art is beautifully tasteful. I won’t disagree with those statements, what drew me to this visual novel was that the premise spoke about a young man who works in a bookstore but he is also a writer. The other thing that I’ve read, but I could be wrong, was that there was only one artist who worked on this game and created the most amazing CGs in this game.

As you can see above, the artist completely captured an elegantly put way of how writers/novelists/readers see books or how they write stories. We get enveloped in the words and devour the text like candy, completely submerging ourselves in a world that is truly captivating and engaging. I swear the artwork is so unbelievably magical, I was amazed by how gorgeous it came out and it was truly magnificent.

I’m also a historical setting game lover/nerd, so knowing that this game takes place in the Taisho era, I was quick to purchase it and was aesthetically pleased with the entire game’s plot setting. While we only have a few routes to undertake to get everyone’s routes unlocked, here is where my problem began…

The first route literally blew my mind, as in, I went brain dead with the redundancy of the chapters. I understand the premise of the game is time travel, and the first route you play is static, but I found myself gritting my teeth with the habits and thoughts of the main character. A lot of his ideas and solutions were agonizingly terrible and it made me want to punch the computer to see if my fist could slam into his cheek.

waiting gif GIF

You see, the story was engaging in the first few chapters but after chapter 6-250,000 or repeats you go through, I was exhausted as hell. I couldn’t keep up with the story anymore and I lost complete interest; I will state I finished the true route which is the static story I’m talking about with his best friend that you’re trying to save. While the ending was emotionally satisfying without any tragedy (thank the gods for that otherwise I would of burned this game and possibly rage destroyed my computer…), the other routes are still waiting in the wind to be played.

And to be very honest with everyone, I will most likely challenge playing this game all the way from the beginning again to see if my view has changed. I usually try and give a game a second chance even if the initial game play was terrible, because I could of been moody or not patient enough to dissect the story like I normally do.

At this moment the game is sitting on my ‘TBP” list, as it was a nifty penny to purchase and I know I’ve gotta suck it up and go for it.

Okay, guys, I played this game back in the day and while the guys are hot looking of the routes fall short on what I felt was lack of enthusiasm for writing skills. The story is about an office romance, and I’m down for those kinds of tropes any day, however, it needs to be written well. Sadly, this game fell short of that, a lot of the routes feel incomplete and lack a certain amount of depth for us to really care about the characters and the MC.

How does it fall short? The stories focus more on the aspect of the heroine being either harrassed or bullied in some way or another to get her to be a better associate. I wasn’t keen with how everyone’s version of teasing was either inappropriate or borderline harassment and that’s an absolute ‘no no’ in my book. The game itself has stunning visuals and well drawn characters, it was saddening that they didn’t take the pleasure in developing a solid conflict, romance, and emotionally satisfying end for the routes.

Also, there were some instances that I felt I wanted to have the option to bitch slap a character to the next century for their comments.

Gray’s Reaction:

madea GIF

This game had so much potential and it fell short on creating characters that we could fall for, the MC was at best, passive-aggressive and I can’t let that trait fly. It only works if the heroine slowly develops out of that trait and grows into someone who doesn’t talk that way every time. I digress, there were a few routes that were gems in the story, one of them being Koji Nagumo, he’s a sweet heart but I will point out he is ‘vanilla’ so don’t get your hopes up for sexy scenes.

There was also Shota the loveable little ‘shota’ type, while he was cute and fairly adorable in his route. I felt the writers didn’t do the story justice as the stories written with younger males tend to have the heroine looking at these characters as a younger brother. The MC kept mentioning it consistently that Shota was the same age as her brother and what not, and she doted on him like one.

I understand to a certain extent but the incident that caused some type of conflict to ‘help’ transition their relationship from brother/sister type vibe to relationship vibe was deflating… It could have been written better. Thus my sadness about how this game could of been so much more…

The only spice that probably would show up here and there was when you take on Tora’s route, but that’ll be a review in and of itself…

I’ll take that as a compliment.

However, I do think that after the fallout of this game occurred, Voltage took in the feedback fans had about the problems this game had. As the next game that came out with a similar type of work background turned out to be a very well done game with more satisfying developments and emotional connections to the characters and the heroine.

Secrets of Me on Steam

Guys, I love the horror genre and Yandere’s are a type of character I like, so when I first saw this game I thought it had that same element. Unfortunately, I was very wrong, and there were a lot of moments in this game that were more questionable than likable for a gamer. You’re basically getting revenge on the suitors you see above because they’ve made fun of you for how ugly you were and all the cringe-worthy bullshit of bullying that I DO NOT CONDONE.

lucious lyon wtf GIF

It wasn’t even creepy or scary, it was just plain odd and didn’t give the feeling as if you were in a cat and mouse chase, it was more … How to explain. That you weren’t really doing any stalking, you were more obsessed to get the guy’s attention, then low and behold you fall in love with him even though it’s suppose to be the other way around. Rather than obsessed to be love, it was more obsessed for attention; starving for this one person to notice you…

No real feelings of vengeance… I did not get my ‘lady revenge’ kicks out of this one and neither was I impressed by the cast of men, I couldn’t fall in love with anyone or even like them.

You get plastic surgery to enhance your beauty and then go on a completely strange stalking spree of sorts to try and get this twisted version of revenge on the guy you choose… Normally, weird games I tend to take a dive into because I’m a believer that every otome game deserves some love and affection.

Secrets of Me on Steam

This game had some very beautiful CGs and I actually like a lot of the games created by D3Publishers ‘Forbidden Romance’ series, one of them being Pub Encounters and The Men of Yoshiwara. This game was a shoo-in for me when it first came out on mobile and I bought it immediately when I saw that D3 had published it. However, there was so much that occurred in all of the routes that I was sitting there for a moment unsure of what I read LMAO.

Gray’s Reaction:

I really couldn’t wrap my head around the strange antics the MC would pull and I didn’t understand the logic of the men either. I try to be understanding, and I like getting to know what makes someone tick in a game and also in real life, but this was just a little much for my tastes. As docile as the game looks, don’t let it fool you with how weird the characters are, and that includes the storyline itself.

Otome Games: Our Guide & Where To Start - Rice Digital

While these games are in my top three of the least favorites, I don’t hate them. It’s rare for me to extremely dislike a game to the point that I rage about how poorly it was created. To put this in a better perspective, games such as these are good examples as to why I break down my reviews to single routes versus reviewing the game as a whole. As there are always certain gray areas of a game that can either be distasteful or fantasy acceptable.

I don’t favor these games but I have no doubt you’ll be seeing reviews about them in this blog in the upcoming months that we see, but until then, these games will be listed on my ‘TBP” list.

The Dom Type in Visual Novels (If You Want to be Whipped…)

In a previous post I spoke about Tsunderes and my love/hate relationship with them, while some of those men can take the cake with irritating me to no end. There is one particular type of character(s) I don’t care to touch as often as they are very virile and dominant in their nature. As we go deeper into the Visual Novel Helldom, we start to take a look at the different types of people you’ll meet in the games, and one of the most popular character types is…

The Dom aka Alpha ‘Daddy’

Eisuke Ichinomiya

*Snort* Okay, I know I did the ‘daddy’ thing because I have a very delicate relationship with this type of character even in romance novels, and for good reasons. This type of character is very easily able to be written as an abusive Motherfucker, or a proper dominant alpha with a possessiveness that can treat his lover PROPERLY.

One GOOD example of a BAD dominant male is:

This is my own personal opinion, please don’t fight me about it.

I feel that Christian Grey was poorly created in domination play with a submissive, and honestly, I cringe whenever I remember the foreplay and ‘sex’ scenes that were created in the book. I feel that the book was geared more towards older women, and the fact that it sorta crossed the boundaries of BDSM; I digress… I feel the only thing about the man that was good was when he walked away because I was totally okay with saying ‘bye’ to his face.

A good example of an AWESOME dominant male:

Gideon Cross is the best example of what a good dominant male is like, he gives up control to his lover and changes into a better person for her. However, he isn’t someone who will allow his morals or characteristics to be changed by force, that’s where things get very fierce. This is normal, you shouldn’t be trying to change anyone into anything, they should change naturally because they want to change not because someone is pointing the gun at their head to do so.

I’m a book reader, so be bound to see book references in here besides VNs *cheers*

Assessing the Dom

Internal Scream LMAO

What exactly is a Dom type and what are their characteristics… Oh I can give you a big list but let’s keep it simple… or try to.

Driven to Conquer

In most Otome games, the Dom is a person driven for success, usually, they are already a successful person in a game and or they’ve created an empire for themselves and rule over it like a king (cough, Eisuke). Their focus tends to be on obtaining a certain goal, whether it’s fame, success, or world peace, these guys learn certain tactics and maneuvers to forge their own paths. Creating several pathways for success, once they get what they want, they’ll move onto the next goal on their itinerary unless something changes their ideals.

The Leaders/Kings:

These guys are never someone to sit in the backseat or the passenger side, they don’t like mixed messages and cannot stand when you’re wasting their time. A lot of times in harems, or thriller type games with a romantic element in there, the dom type is the leader of the group. It’s actually easy to spot them in most cases in a game since they will most likely be either in the center of the game cover or they have a close upon them.

A Look at 10 Days with my Devil (with screenshots) | Otaku Clock
Look at Kakeru ‘Toast’ Babe… Hogging the spotlight LMAO

I digress, when the dom is portrayed as the leader of the group you better get ready to fight the man because you best believe your opinions will be ignored at the beginning which will definitely make you scream (or want to slap the absolute fuck outta them). To absolutely honest, because my astrological chart that allows my expression of speech is in Aries; which tends to be the typical sign of these doms besides Leo. You best believe when I see comments like this from a dom:

Entitled to the World

We can’t have a dom without a sense of entitlement, whether they created their kingdom from the ground up or were served it on a silver platter these guys don’t take too kindly when you rain on their parade. Most of the time, if a Dom is done correctly, their actions to rule the world and be entitled to everything stems from a sense of a loss. However, they don’t personally make it a habit to degrade or humiliate someone unless you challenged them in their territory.

pretty as you please. — LLFTX Thoughts & Walkthrough: Riki Yanase

When you do meet a very preferably dom type, his nature of being entitled to everything and be fierce can kinda come off cute because they can’t express that they’re either jealous and whatnot properly.

Keith, baby, just say you’re jealous ffs…

Ah, the epitome of what draws a lot of fans to these types of men, the aggressive nature that they project, and the fact that they always happened to be hot as hell. Doms are fairly expressive when they are attracted to their love interest, a lot of it being sexually suggestive and doing things that are of ‘forced’ seduction. Somewhat similar to an S-Do type, the dom tempts the MC to do things that would push them out of their comfort zone.

I believe that this is the biggest reason why there’s a big attraction to these type of men in games, I feel the danger and also the bedroom bully ordeal entices audiences into choosing this kind of romance. I will agree, there are very few Dom types that are done well, and make you shiver from excitement at exactly what is about to unravel between you two. However, the biggest downfall for these characters at times happens to be when the MC cannot stand their own ground against them.

While the idea of being a submissive character in a romantic aspect is cool in the bedroom, it’s not really a warming comfort characteristic to have when you go toe to toe with an alpha. There are a few stories that I can deal with the alpha being the way he is and the MC being docile, but half the time it’s a no from me.

However, let’s get a good example of some seriously sexy dom types:

Riki Yanase from Love Letter from Thief X

Riki Yanase from Love Letter from Thief X is a good example as while he is one of my favorite versions of a dom, he likes to be sexually explicit with his way of talking and teasing the MC. Usually drawing her to a false sense of security is when he takes that moment to ‘attack’ and place a situation between them that definitely gets your cheeks red.

REVIEW] Had sex with Riki Yanase from Love Letter From Thief X ...

Other times, he doesn’t need to place the MC in those situations as they are already in an area where he can do as he pleases and say exactly what he wants.

Kakeru baby, definitely lives up to his name as the prince of hell, he wears his entitlement and ego like armor and doesn’t mind flaunting that alpha power in front of everyone. If Voltage Inc did decide to raise the bar about adding BDSM into their games, Kakeru Kamui would definitely be on my list of ‘let me see your dirty kinks.’ He pretty much orders you around in the beginning but after he falls in love it’s more of a dom ordering his sub, lovingly, to listen to him.

He’s a very caring person even with his ego being the size of the Atlantic Ocean…

Love, Hate, or F**k Them?

The truth is still the fact I have a love/hate relationship with this character a little more than a Tsun-Tsun type. Tsun’s are fairly easier to manage with their hot and cold emotions, those guys are easier to tease and get the truth out of in a game. However, don’t expect that from a don type, they are extremely prideful but they will apologize when they know they were truly in the wrong.

But, the best explanation that my friends and I say about this type of character is:

The number one reaction

This is my own way of expressing what I think about them, I don’t agree with how they talk but you can’t help but want to challenge these alpha pricks at their own game. So when there is ever a choice to say something snarky, aggressive, and sarcastic–Oh you best believe that’s the first option I click on first, regardless of if it is the answer that gives me good or negative points.

It also may be a good case in point to bring up a famous dom in the Otome field, Eisuke Ichinomiya, I have an extreme love and hate relationship with this alpha Capricorn. His paid version irked me and made me dislike his intentions, it was a stark difference to his Party version which was a way more likable persona. So in honesty, I love his party version, hate his paid version.

FYI: Back in my days on tumblr, I had to RP as Eisuke for two days as part of a punishment game. Hooooooo boy……….. I am gonna say I’ve never had an inbox explode until those two days; anyone who RPs as Eisuke I salute the hell outta you because he’s a very high in demand dude. *Hat’s off to you*

Gray’s Corner

Regardless, these are just my own opinions and everyone has different tastes; we can safely agree to either disagree or enjoy that we all have a love/hate relationship with certain types of characters. In conclusion, I feel this type of character is also a necessary component in any game, they do help spice up the storylines and romance but they can also pull an alluring intensity into the gameplay that you can help but consider… if you want to be dominated.
